Being on the Mediterranean Sea, it goes without saying that the beaches in Catalunya are spectacular. White sand, transparent waters, hot sun and lots of activities to keep tourists and locals busy all day. Listed in no particular order here are some of the finer beaches in Catalunya, Spain.
Pals Beach in the town of Pals in Costa Brava, is the longest beach.
Cala Giverola in Tossa del Mar, Girona
Calella de Palafrugell Beach at Costa Brava is a fishing village known for its seafood restaurants. Somewhat exclusive, it is considered the prettiest of resorts with its beautiful botanical garden, stunning views and relaxing ambience.
Cap de Creus, in Costa Brava, Girona is located in Cap de Creus Natural Park surrounded by mountains.
Beach of Santa Cristina in Girona is a great beach if one likes open space, as the beach is not very crowded. This area is perfect for diving, as the water is so clean and inviting. Gold sands surrounded by pine trees make this beach a true paradise.
Sant Pol Beach, in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Girona is the most popular beach in Sant Feliu because of the swimming and water sports.
Castelldefels Beach is eight miles long with shower facilities, toilets, wheelchair accessibility, snack bars, ice-cream stands, lifeguards and rescue boats. This beach is very clean as the sand is sifted daily and the water is tested regularly.
Tossa de Mar in Costa Brava, Girona is divided into four beaches called Mar Menuda, Platja del Reig, Platja Gran and Es Codular. The main beach is Platja Gran in the center of town. It has many facilities including parasols, hammocks, toilets, showers, water skiing, parasailing, paddleboats, kayaks, glass bottom boats and restaurants. The other three beaches are minutes away from the town center with varying degrees of facilities.
Barceloneta Beach is within walking distance of Barcelona City’s downtown area. Because of its proximity to the city, the beach gets very crowded. Vendors walk the beach selling soda, pop, beer and snacks. This area has many seafood restaurants offering catch of the day dishes.
Puerto de Marina Empuriabrava Beach, sandy and golden, is home to the largest residential marina in Europe. Located in the middle of Costa Brava in the province of Girona, this area is only thirty years old but is known by its vast canal system and magnificent homes. The beach offers windsurfing schools, sailboat lessons, kayaking, water scooters and any other sport that can be enjoyed in or on the water.
Platges de Llorell is another popular beach with all the activities and facilities of a large resort.
Lastly, for those that prefer the “au naturel” type of bathing, there are several nudist beaches throughout Catalunya including Cala Figuera, designated areas on Pals Beach, Platja de la Mar Bella and Platja de Sant Sebastià in Barcelona.
